Robert Harper is an American bassist, singer, songwriter, and composer active in the funk, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz scenes. He began playing bass at the age of 13 and was already performing professionally in California clubs by 17. After studying at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, he began working as a session musician, developing a distinctive style characterized by the creative use of effects, an approach he further refined under the guidance of legendary Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert.
His career and musical background are closely connected to major figures in funk and R&B, including Louis Johnson, Robert Wilson, James Mtume, Bootsy Collins, Garrett Shider, and Greg Boyer. He has performed and collaborated with numerous artists and bands and also served as musical director for the television program “In The House.”
In 2012, Harper returned to the spotlight as a solo artist with the album *Nujazzfunk*, followed by *Ride With Me* (2020), *The Fonk Record* (2021), and his latest release, *Transformation*. His music ranges from instrumental funk and hip-hop to original compositions that place the bass at the center of the performance. His single *Tha Bomb*, featuring Garrett Shider and Greg Boyer, has received radio airplay in the United States and internationally.
Alongside his recording and live career, Harper continues to work as a session bassist and teaches music theory, sight-reading, and professional skills to young musicians. He also produces promotional content and product demonstrations for companies in the music industry.
His energetic and distinctive style has earned him endorsements from leading musical instrument and accessory brands, including Paul Lairat Basses, GR Bass, Gallistrings, Flattley Guitar Pedals, Telefunken, Fishman, Reunion Blues, and Rigotti Cables. He is also a member of the Recording Academy and regularly performs across the United States, including with his acoustic project, Robert Harper & Friends.
